Literature Text

Note to people: Last year in Science we had to dissect a worm. The teacher said we had to do a lab report describing what we did and saw, she made it especially clear to be VERY DESCRIPTIVE!!! So, I decided to be an over achiever and make sure it was as descriptive as possible! Little did I know that the teacher wasn’t actually grading the assignment….the SUPER INTENDENT was. I had a little talk after class….

Materials and methods:
For this lab a tray was used to keep the worm in. A knife was present so that the people could penetrate the dorsal side of the skin and cut it open. After being sliced open from the anterior to the posterior pins were used to slowly pull back and hold the firm and rugged flesh in place so the entrails could be more easily viewed with the unaided eye. The skin was tough, so simply cutting through the worm’s skin without damaging the organs beneath was difficult. At first the slicing motion was painstakingly slow, but as more flesh was cut the operation was sped up and the incisions became more centered and purposeful. A rusted metal rod stick was used and poked and prodded the organism at various points and angles to get a better view of the specimen throughout the dissection.

Results (best part :) )
The results of the dissection were quite satisfying. Its 5 main organs were soft; light brown on the outside and dark brown on inside. They were rather squishy when poked. The worm was moist, slippery, and slid through fingers like jelly. It made a peculiar thud sound when dropped into the pan and laid limb where it had been placed. Upon cutting it the worm’s juices squirted out and quickly soaked the pan, making it wet and slightly sticky to the touch.  Said juices were a clear color and oozed out of the worm continually while the experiment was being conducted. One could liken the sensation of running their glove covered finger across its slimy moist underside to be a bit ruff and rugged, as that’s where its bristle-like setae are located.

Discussion/ Conclusion
In conclusion, compared to the book the specimen dissected looked similar to the diagram shown in the textbook. The skin of the worm was tough and hard to slice through with efficiency, which caused trouble in the dissection. The knife had to be raked multiple times across the slimy surface before the skin broke; this damaged many of the organs of the first worm and made them be mutilated beyond recognition. The second worm used was cut much neater and the pins pierced its flesh in more places so the organs were more intact. The smaller body parts such as the mouth and ovaries were unable to be seen during the dissection, yet overall the vast majority of the worm’s vitals were seen and identified.

Yeah...I did get an A- on it though! (Should I upload my equally as descriptive frog dissection?)
So :iconfire-mutt: inspired me to post bits of my worm essay I did last year!
